Restoring the New Deal

While I totally agree that Clinton is closer to the center than Sanders is, they’re still both far to the left of guys like Kasich, Rubio, or Jeb!

There Is a Moderate Republican in this Race, but She’s Running as a Democrat • 2016 Mar 21 • Tony Brasunas • Medium

I think it’s hard to call Clinton a moderate Republican when there are still Blue Dog Democrats in the House who are way more conservative than she is (but are still way too liberal to be able to run as Republicans.)

I suppose the argument is that moderate and liberal Republicans no longer exist, but I think that’s been largely the case since Nixon enacted the Southern Strategy.

Depending on how you define it, one could argue that the modern Democratic party has always been neoliberal—generally favoring market mechanisms over directed central planning—but I suppose the current strain of Third Wayism is most identified with Bill Clinton, who heralded the political obsolescence of the New Deal coalition. In many ways, Sanders is really trying to restore the New Deal coalition which is why it makes no sense to me to try to call him a “fake Democrat”.
