Today is a Day of Remembrance for the Japanese American community. On this date in 1942, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, authorizing the “evacuation” of all persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast, because we happened to look like the people who’d bombed Pearl Harbor. My family was sent to a prison camp in Arkansas, the site of which I recently visited, shown here. It has been my life’s mission to ensure that the mistakes of the past are remembered and never repeated. In these troubled times, the echoes of our dark past continue to sound, and so I am doubly committed to my mission. Join in me in saying #NeverForget #NeverAgain.
