LotR's Expanded Universe
(Inspired by a post comparing the mythology of Middle Earth with the Star Wars Expanded Universe)
It’s easy to think J.R.R. Tolkien was crazy for trying to publish The Silmarillion but there’s a good likelihood that he never intended it to be published.
The main purpose of creating Middle Earth was for him to have a universe where he could deploy his invented languages.
There are probably at least five self-contained novels in The Silmarillion but some of them are in really rudimentary form.
It occurs to me that while it’s comical that the Sith/the Empire/the First Order can’t stop building planet-destroying weapons with single points of failure, the reason why they’re able to continue doing so is because the Bad Guys as a whole don’t have a single point of failure and can never be completely vanquished.
For some reason, a snippet of dialog from “The Princess Bride” has entered my head:
Dread Pirate Roberts Look, are you just fiddling around with me or what?
Fezzik I just want you to feel that you’re doing well. I hate for people to die embarrassed.
