A duality:

simplicity propagating to complexity: constructing fractals, underpinning chaos
complexity collapsing down to simplicity: pattern recognition, reductionism
like all dualities, not really a duality, any more than light is really a wave or a particle (it is both, it is neither, the Tao that can be named is not the true Tao)
